Stoetzel first, Theis third as Bees win Duhawk Invite

Jacob Stoetzel won individual medalist honors and Carsen Theis finished third to lead St. Ambrose to the team championship at the Duhawk Fall Invitational played at the Meadows in Asbury, Iowa.

Stoetzel tied for first individually, but won based on a card-back tiebreaker. He collected four birdies while shooting a 74 Sunday, then, with three more birdies, including a pair on the front 9, he shot a 1-under 71 Monday. His only blemish in the second round was a double-bogey on No. 14. He finished with a 1-over 145.

Theis matched Stoetzel for the team's low round of the tournament, firing a 1-under 71 Sunday. His round included an eagle on No. 9 and a birdie on 12. He birdied three more holes Monday to shoot a 75 to finish a shot out of the lead with a 146.

The two were backed up by Ben King, whose rounds of 75 and 79 gave him a 154 and 13th place overall. Griffin Smits shot a 159 (78-81) and Vinny Messana ended with a 165 (82-83).

With two Bees at the top of the leaderboard, St. Ambrose hung on to win the team title. SAU's opening 298 was the lone sub-300 round of the two-day, 11-team event hosted by Loras. The Bees followed that with a 306 for a 604. Clarke and Buena Vista tied for second with 610s.

A second St. Ambrose team took sixth. That group of Bees shot a 307 and 312 for a 619.

Jacob Lange earned a top-10 finish. He shot back-to-back 75s for a 150, good for seventh place. Luke Purcell tied King for 13th place with a 154 after rounds of 78 and 76. Brody Miguel (74-85=159), Hayden Lee (82-78=160) and Zach Priami (80-83=163) also played for the Bees.

St. Ambrose will host the NAIA National Preview at TPC Deere Run next Monday and Tuesday.
