Stoetzel earns top-10 finish at NAIA National Preview

A strong first round allowed Jacob Stoetzel to earn a top-10 finish at the NAIA National Preview hosted by St. Ambrose at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., Monday and Tuesday.

Among a field of 21 teams, featuring some of the best golf programs in the country, Stoetzel looked to have a shot at a top-five showing after firing an even-par 71 Monday. He slipped slightly Tuesday, carding a 77 to finish with a 148 and in a four-way tie for ninth.

Carsen Theis backed Stoetzel by finishing 20th. Theis shot rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151.

The duo helped St. Ambrose more than hold its own.

SAU was one of the more consistent teams in the tournament, having rounds of 305 and 306 for a 611. That left the Bees in a tie for eighth.

Marian, the 14th-ranked team in the NAIA preseason poll, won with a 594 (292-302). Hastings finished second with a 598 (297-301).

Ben King had the Bees' second-best round of the event, closing with a 2-over 73. That followed an 82 to give him a 155. Jacob Lange shot rounds of 81 and 80 for a 161 and Griffin Smits finished with a 78 and an 87 for a 165.

Indiana Wesleyan's Sam Dykema claimed individual medalist honors with a 5-under 137 (68-69). He won by five strokes.

St. Ambrose will compete in the Clarke Fall Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at the Eagle Ridge South Course in Galena, Ill.
