Spring season officially underway at WIU Intercollegiate
The spring competition season officially teed off for St. Ambrose Thursday and Friday at the WIU Intercollegiate played at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
The two-day, 54-hole event hosted by Western Illinois featured several NCAA Division I programs and top junior college teams.
While battling through the rain, the Bees finished in seventh place with a 934 total.
Carsen Theis led the team with a 15th-place finish. He opened with a 1-over 72 before firing back-to-back 75s for his 222.
Mason Steinert, playing as an individual, ended in 25th place. He shot rounds of 76-75-77 for a 228.
Ben King, Jacob Stoetzel and Griffin Smits helped St. Ambrose to a strong final round.
King shot rounds of 80-79 before a final-round 76 gave him a 235. Stoetzel carded rounds of 81-83 but bounced back with the Bees' second-best round of the tournament with a closing 74 for a 238. Smits finished with a 76 after starting with an 80-86 for a 242 total.
Luke Purcell (81-83-83) shot a 247 for St. Ambrose.
The Bees finished with a 934 after rounds of 313-320-301. Indian Hills won the event with an 840 (285-286-269). Miles Bollinger from Indian Hills claimed medalist honors with a 6-under 207 (72-68-67). He was one of four players to finish under par.
SAU will compete at the Loras Spring Invitational at The Meadows in Asbury, Iowa, Apr. 12-13.
