Steinert runner-up as Bees win Loras Spring Invite

Mason Steinert shot a second-round 3-under 69 to lead St. Ambrose to the team title at the Loras Spring Invitational at The Meadows in Asbury, Iowa.

Steinert carded the best round of the two-day tournament as part of a big second day for the Bees Monday.

Steinert opened with an 80 Sunday before firing his 69 to jump 22 spots into second place. His 149 finished only behind Wartburg's Vaughn Tyler, who finished with a 1-over 145.

Ben King also made a big move. After opening with a 79, King closed with a 72 to climb into a tie for fifth with a 151. That matched Carsen Theis's total. Theis was the only Bee in the top five who didn't see improvement in his score Monday. But his consistency with rounds of 75 and 76 gave him a 151 and a share of fifth place.

Jacob Stoetzel (78-74) was just a shot back of his two teammates with a 152, good for seventh place. Griffin Smits (80-78) shot a 158.

St. Ambrose held just a two-shot lead over Dubuque after a first-round 312. But the Bees pulled away from the 12-team field with a 3-over 291 Monday to win by 18 shots.

A second SAU team placed ninth with a 632 (324-308).

Keegan Renz earned a top-20 finish with rounds of 80 and 76 for a 156. Also competing for the Bees were Luke Frazier (80-77=157), Luke Purcell (82-77=159), Vinny Messana (82-78=160) and Brody Miguel (84-79=163).

St. Ambrose will now head to the postseason. The Bees will host the CCAC Championships next Thursday and Friday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
