SAU claims second straight CCAC Championship

With Ben King and Mason Steinert finishing in the top five, and all five Bees scoring among the top 15, St. Ambrose secured its second straight CCAC Championship Friday afternoon at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

The Bees shot a three-round 902 to win by 20 shots, but the championship wasn't sealed until the final day.

After playing 36 holes Thursday, St. Ambrose held just a slim three-shot advantage over second-place Olivet Nazarene. SAU opened with rounds of 306 and 302 for a 608 while ONU fired a second-round 299 after a 312 for a 611 total.

But the Bees posted the best round of the nine-team tournament Friday, shooting a 294. The Tigers couldn't keep up, carding a closing 311 to finish with a 922. Viterbo finished third with a 934 (307-322-305). Judson and Saint Xavier tied for fourth with 946s.

St. Ambrose will now represent the CCAC at the NAIA Championships May 12-15, also played at TPC Deere Run.

Along with back-to-back team titles, the Bees nearly had the individual medalist of the conference tournament for the second consecutive year.

Among a bunched leaderboard, King's climb fell a shot short of repeating Dylan McAleer's 2025 championship run.

King, who opened with an even-par 70 behind five birdies, slipped with a second-round 81. He found his footing Friday, firing a 74. His back nine included a birdie and seven pars but it wasn't quite enough. King finished with a 225 to claim runner-up honors. Viterbo's JJ Kaczynski held on to medalist honors by a single shot with a 224 (73-75-76).

Steinert also made a move Friday. Rounds of 79 and 76 put him just inside the top 10 entering the final round. But two birdies as part of a 1-under 33 on the front nine put him in contention. Steinert carded a 2-over 72 to finish with a 227, good for fourth place and a spot on the all-tournament team.

Jacob Stoetzel also finished the championship with a 72. That followed rounds of 81 and 77 for a 230 total and left him in a tie for seventh.

Griffin Smits and Carsen Theis tied for 15th. Smits started with an 86 before coming back with rounds of 73 and 76 for his 235. Theis shot back-to-back 76s before an 83 gave him his 235.

Luke Purcell served as the team's alternate.
