Bees extend winning streak to four

Saturday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa, the Bees hosted a conference match against the Benedictine Ravens. Despite trailing in the first quarter, St. Ambrose fought back to win 10-7 to extend its winning streak to four games.

Both teams were 4-1 (tied for second) in conference, and came into this match fighting for the upper hand to move up in the standings. St. Ambrose, on home field, came with energy to open up the match with Ryan Swanson beating his defender at X to score. The Ravens answered this back scoring three times. Down 3-1, with the shot clock counting down, Cameron Washington found Jagger Shaddix for an outside shot and goal. With no one able to find the back of the net for the last six minutes, the Ravens led 3-2. Isaac Martinez held it down in goal for the Bees and made four saves.

The Bees scored quickly to open up the second quarter. On a man-up play, Swanson at the top of the box threw a skip pass to Washington open on crease to tie it 3-3. Four minutes later on another man-up opportunity for SAU, Lachlan Hodge fed Ayden Fraelle for a step down goal. With SAU up by one, Benedictine answered back on a man-up of their own to tie it at 4-4. With five minutes left in the half, Hodge passed it over to Shaddix for a shot down the right alley for a goal. That goal put St. Ambrose up 5-4 to end the first half of play.

Both teams came out slow to start the second half. With 9:32 in the third, the Bees were man down but Eli Hahn cleared the ball and took it to the cage for a goal. Benedictine, down by two, scored 18 seconds later while still man up. Two minutes passed by, Hahn cleared the ball and took a step down outside shot, and stung it top right to put the Bees up 7-5. With six seconds left in the quarter, Shaddix passed it to Hahn open on the left side of the field to put the ball top shelf for a goal. St. Ambrose ended the quarter up 8-5.

To start the fourth, the Ravens scored quickly to bring the lead down to two. Battling back and forth, the Bees scored at the eight minute mark with Washington finding Fraelle scoring on a bounce shot. With found energy, Hodge fed Zakary Brown open for another Bee goal to take a 10-6 lead. With 2:32 left to play, Benedictine scored looking to comeback but was too late. SAU closed out the game with a 10-7 win.

With a huge conference win for the Bees, Hahn led the charge with three goals while causing four turnovers. Fraelle and Shaddix each put in two goals while Brown, Washington, and Swanson each notched one in. Hodge was dishing out the ball grabbing three assists on the day with Washington dishing out two, Swanson getting one, and Shaddix one.

Martinez led the way for the defense making 10 saves. Aidan Fergus, Joey Curzon, and Hodge were active on defense causing two turnovers each while Lucas Mytych, Joe Campbell, and Dominic Della Vedova each tagged on one CT.

This win puts St. Ambrose 5-1 in conference and 5-6 overall. The Bees, now on a four-game win streak, will look to keep rolling with another conference game on Wednesday when they take on Missouri Valley College in another home game for SAU.
