St. Ambrose drops doubleheader to No. 19 Saint Xavier
The St. Ambrose Bees were up for a battle Wednesday against the 19 ranked Saint Xavier Cougars. The Bees bats were silent until the final two innings in game one. Ellie Downing (1 R, 1 H) lead off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single out to center field. She made her way around the bases and scored the first run for St. Ambrose on a Mya Millsaps (1 RBI) sacrifice fly to center field. The Bees got their second run in the seventh inning in a similar fashion. Taylor Martyn (1 R, 1 H) singled to center field in final scoring attempt. She advanced to second before going all the way home on a Becca Haag (2 H, 1RBI) drive to left field. St. Ambrose fell just short of surpassing St. Xavier, finishing the game with a score of 2-5. Three additional Bees recorded a hit in game one, Mady Reed, Kylee Claypool, and Peyton Leonard.
Pitchers in game one were Leah Maro and Bianca Shorter.
In game two, the Bees struck early in the second inning. Mia Souliotis (1 H, 1 RBI) drove a single through the right side bringing in Claypool (2 R, 1 H) from second base. In the bottom of the fourth inning St. Ambrose had another chance to chip away at the growing cougar lead. Haag (1 R, 1 H, 1 2B) started the inning with a double hit to left field. She later scored on a line to left field by Reagan Engberg (2 H, 1 RBI). Claypool rounded the bases to home plate on a Martyn ( 1 H, 1 RBI) drive to center field. That was not enough for the Bees. The final score was 3-12 in five innings in favor of the #19 Cougars.
Pitchers in game two were Ada Boysen, Allyson Harrold, and Kylie Schult.
St. Ambrose softball is back in action Saturday as they travel to Whiting, Ind. to take on the Calumet Crimson Wave.
