Jolin sparks fourth-quarter rally in win over WPU

Erin Jolin scored 14 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead St. Ambrose to a 56-55 win over William Penn Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

Jolin knocked down two 3-pointers in the final quarter, including one with 90 seconds left that gave the Bees a 56-55 lead.

The SAU defense, which limited William Penn (2-3) to less than 30 percent shooting from the field, did the job from there, holding the Statesmen scoreless on their final three possessions, including a missed 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

St. Ambrose (2-1) entered the fourth quarter trailing 42-38 and faced its largest deficit at 48-42 early in the period.

Then Jolin took over.

The freshman hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to cut the deficit in half. It was the start of a personal 8-0 run for Jolin. She followed the triple with a layup and then converted a three-point play to give SAU a 50-48 lead with 6:06 left.

WPU recovered to regain a 55-51 lead with 2:32 remaining. But Thole scored inside to get St. Ambrose to within 55-53 and after a stop, Jolin buried what proved to be the game-winning three.

The dramatic ending came after a dominant first quarter. Playing at home for the first time this season, the Bees built a 12-point lead in the first and lead 16-6 after one.

But as good as the first quarter was, the second quarter was the exact opposite. The Bees were outscored by the Statesmen 18-8 and the teams entered the halftime break tied at 24-24.

Both teams faced offensive challenges. While holding WPU to 29.8-percent shooting, SAU shot just 35.4 percent for the game. The Bees also allowed the Statesmen to stay in the game by shooting just 17-of-33 from the line.

Jolin led the Bees with 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Abby Wolter finished with 15 points, seven boards, three assists and three blocked shots. The two combined for 31 of the team's 56 points.

Payton Calouette finished with six points, Jayla Stirgus dropped in five, and Caitlyn Thole and Olivia Harter each netted four. Hayley Flores, Isabella Hutchinson and Mary Gruber scored two points apiece.

St. Ambrose will open CCAC play Wednesday by hosting Saint Xavier.
