Three in double figures as Bees defeat Titans
Hayley Flores hit two free throws to tie the game at 67-67 and seconds later Caitlyn Thole buried a 3-pointer to help St. Ambrose to a 70-69 at Indiana South Bend Saturday afternoon.
Flores and Thole were two of three Bees to score in double figures in the victory, along with Abby Wolter.
St. Ambrose (3-2, 1-1) took a 54-47 lead into the fourth quarter and held its largest lead of 10 points at 57-47 on an Isabella Hutchinson 3-pointer a minute into the final quarter.
Indiana South Bend clawed back to pull even at 63-63 with 3:30 to play. After the teams traded baskets, the Titans pulled ahead 67-65 on a pair of free throws with 1:48 left.
Flores was fouled on the Bees' next possession and calmly hit both free throws to knot the score at 67-67. After a defensive stop, Thole knocked down her three with 36 seconds on the clock.
IU South Bend scored to get back within a single point, and had a chance for the win after SAU missed a pair of free throws. But a final shot in the closing seconds was off the mark as the Bees held on for the win.
The two teams shot at nearly identical rates. St. Ambrose was 25-of-58 from the field, including a 9-of-28 mark from beyond the arc. IU South Bend was 26-of-58 overall and 5-of-14 from 3-point range. The Titans made 12 free throws with the Bees hit 11.
The big difference in the game came on the glass as SAU outrebounded IUSB 39-25.
Wolter led St. Ambrose with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Flores and Thole each netted 12 points. Thole pulled down seven boards.
Hutchinson came off the bench to add nine points and four rebounds. Payton Calouette and Olivia Harter each scored five, Jayla Stirgus had four, Mary Gruber netted three and Erin Jolin dropped in two points to go along with five rebounds and three steals.
The Bees return home to host Mount Mercy Wednesday.
