Second-half rally comes up short at IU Northwest

After trailing by as many as 23 points early in the third quarter, St. Ambrose was able to get as close as a single point in the closing minutes, but the Bees ran out of time in a 62-58 loss at Indiana Northwest Saturday afternoon.

SAU (3-4, 1-2 CCAC) trailed 22-10 after one quarter, 41-26 at the half, and 49-26 just over three minutes into the third quarter.

But the Bees closed the third on a huge run. Jayla Stirgus knocked down a 3-pointer to close the quarter and punctuate a 21-4 run that cut the deficit to 53-47 entering the final period.

Abby Wolter and Olivia Harter had layups to open the fourth to get St. Ambrose to within 53-51 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Wolter would split two free throws to trim the margin to 53-52 seconds later.

With a chance at the lead, SAU came up empty on its next two possessions and IU Northwest (2-6, 1-2 CCAC) finally broke a long scoring drought with a 3-pointer to rebuild a four-point lead with five minutes left.

The RedHawk lead eventually grew to eight points inside the final two minutes.

The Bees put together a final push. Baskets from Stirgus and Wolter cut the score to 60-56 before Wolter hit two free throws to get SAU to within 60-58 with 44 seconds left. A Stirgus steal allowed St. Ambrose a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Bees missed and the RedHawks hit two from the line with four seconds left to end the scoring.

SAU limited IU Northwest to 37.3-percent shooting, but the Bees shot only 32.4 percent themselves. That included a 3-of-16 effort from beyond the arc. St. Ambrose was also out-rebounded 49-35 in the loss.

Wolter led the Bees with 21 points and 13 rebounds. She also came up with three steals.

Stirgus also picked up three steals and was the only other Bee to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. She also handed out a team-best three assists.

Hayley Flores scored nine points and Payton Calouette added seven points and four boards. Caitlyn Thole registered four points and seven rebounds. Isabella Hutchinson finished with three points, and Harter and Erin Jolin each netted two.

SAU will return home to host Viterbo Tuesday.
