Thole scores 1000th career point in big Bee win
Caitlyn Thole scored her 1000th career point to help St. Ambrose to an 83-46 win at Mount Mary Saturday afternoon.
Entering the game needing seven points, Thole hit the milestone in the opening half. Her jumper with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter gave her eight points for the game and put her at 1001 points in her four-year SAU career.
Thole is the 37th St. Ambrose women's basketball player to enter the 1000-point club, and the 90th player in SAU basketball history, combining both the men's and women's programs
The milestone came during a huge second quarter for the Bees.
Holding a 15-10 lead after one period, St. Ambrose exploded for 28 points in the second. The team shot 11-of-14 from the floor, including a 6-of-8 mark from 3-point range.
Elly Doe led the way, burying all three of her 3-point attempts in scoring nine points in the frame. Hayley Flores, Jayla Stigus and Mary Gruber also hit threes in the quarter.
The Bees also did it on the defensive end in the period, forcing Mount Mary (6-5, 0-5 CCAC) into 4-of-12 shooting and six turnovers over those 10 minutes. The result - a 43-19 halftime advantage.
St. Ambrose (5-5, 3-2 CCAC) continued to pour it on in the third quarter, scoring 27 points to extend the lead to 70-37 entering the fourth.
SAU shot better than 45 percent overall and connected on 12 triples in the win. The Blue Angels shot just 33 percent overall and were 2-of-17 from beyond the arc.
In all, 11 Bees scored in the victory.
Abby Wolter, who topped 1000 career points last season, led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Flores scored 14 points and Thole finished with 12, giving her 1005 points in a Bee uniform. Thole also grabbed nine boards.
Doe finished with nine points, Jayla Stirgus had seven, and three players - Gruber, Payton Calouette and Emma Rutter - each scored five.
Bailey Boddicker scored four points, Erica Bostwick netted three and Olivia Harter had two to finish the SAU scoring.
The Bees will host Judson next Saturday.
