Fast start evaporates in loss at Waldorf

After starting 4-of-8 from the floor to open up a fast 9-0 lead, St. Ambrose struggled offensively the rest of the way in a 67-39 loss at Waldorf Wednesday night.

Abby Wolter scored the game's first five points, then Payton Calouette and Jayla Stirgus each added two points as the Bees led 9-0 just over three minutes into the contest.

But over the final nearly 37 minutes, SAU would muster only 30 more points.

Waldorf (1-8) pulled even at 15-15 after the first quarter and held a slim 26-24 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw St. Ambrose (4-5) shoot 3-of-16 from the field, which included an 0-of-5 mark from beyond the arc, as the Warriors outscored the Bees 26-6 in the period to take control.

SAU managed just 15 total points in the second half.

The Bees shot 16-of-67 (23.9 percent) for the game, and those numbers drop to 12-of-59 (20.3 percent) after taking off SAU's strong start. St. Ambrose was just 2-of-26 (7.7 percent) from 3-point range, and the icy shooting carried over to the line as the team was 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) on free throw attempts.

Wolter was the only Bee to score in double figures. She finished with 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Olivia Harter came off the bench to score six. Calouette netted four points. Stirgus and Isabella Hutchinson each scored three points, and Hayley Flores and Erin Jolin dropped in two apiece.

St. Ambrose will return to CCAC play Saturday with a game at Mount Mary.
