Bees shake off slow start to run past Eagles

It wasn't a great start, but it didn't matter in the end as a huge run helped St. Ambrose ran past Judson 62-43 Monday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees spotted the Eagles a 17-7 lead nine minutes into the game.

But after Judson (7-10, 4-7 CCAC) made six of its first 13 shots from the floor, St. Ambrose locked in defensively the rest of the way. Over the final three-plus quarters, the Eagles were just 9-of-40 (22.5 percent) from the field.

It didn't take long for St. Ambrose (9-10, 6-5 CCAC) to erase the deficit.

Abby Wolter and Elly Doe ended the first quarter with 3-pointers to close the gap to 17-13.

The run continued in the second quarter.

Baskets from Wolter and Bailey Boddicker knotted the score at 17-17 two minutes into the period. Wolter then scored to put the Bees in front, and they never looked back.

A Jayla Stirgus 3-pointer pushed the lead to 22-17 before Judson scored to end the 15-point run. SAU went back to work with Isabella Hutchinson converting a three-point play. Stirgus, Wolter and Caitlyn Thole each scored to up the margin to 31-19.

In all, it was a 24-2 spurt that put the Bees in control.

The lead was 34-25 at the half and 46-31 after three as Judson scored a combined 14 points over the middle two frames.

Wolter led all players with 20 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.

Stirgus scored a season-best 16 points to go along with a team-leading five assists.

Thole narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Doe and Payton Calouette each scored six points, Hutchinson finished with three and Boddicker added two.

Calouette and Olivia Harter each came down with six rebounds while Erin Jolin pulled down four.

The Bees will host Calumet Wednesday.
