Big nights from Wolter, Thole not enough in loss at GSU

Despite double-doubles from both Abby Wolter and Caitlyn Thole, St. Ambrose came up short in a 60-52 loss at Governors State Wednesday night.

Wolter finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Thole added 13 points and 10 boards. But only one other Bee - Payton Calouette, who netted nine points - scored more than two points.

St. Ambrose (10-12, 7-7 CCAC) played well defensively, holding Governors State (13-9, 8-6 CCAC) to a 21-of-65 effort from the floor. But the Bees struggled offensively, shooting 22-of-58 overall and just 3-of-18 from beyond the arc.

A major difference came at the free-throw line, where despite shooting a perfect 5-of-5, SAU was outscored 14-5 at the line.

A slow start put the Bees in an early hole.

St. Ambrose made just three of its 13 first-quarter shots in falling behind 14-6 after one.

But the second quarter was a completely different story as SAU was 8-of-15 from the field in outscoring GSU 18-11 in the frame to trail just 25-24 at the half.

The deficit reached 10 points in the third quarter but the Bees capped the period with the final seven points, including a late Calouette 3-pointer to get within 43-40 entering the fourth.

SAU stayed close throughout the fourth with a Thole layup trimming the deficit to 54-50 with 1:15 to play. But Governors State scored on its next possession, and after an empty trip from St. Ambrose, the Jaguars hit two free throws to go up 58-50 with 28 seconds remaining.

A late Wolter layup was answered by two GSU free throws to account for the final score.

Wolter (10-of-20), Thole (6-of-13) and Calouette (3-of-4) combined to go 19-of-37 from the field. The rest of the team was just 3-of-21.

Olivia Harter, Jayla Stirgus and Mary Gruber each scored two points in the loss. Gruber pulled down five rebounds while Erin Jolin grabbed four and Isabella Hutchinson added two. Jolin also blocked three shots for the Bees.

SAU will return home to host Indiana Northwest next Wednesday.
