SAU doubles up Judson 70-35
St. Ambrose will enter next week's CCAC Tournament with some momentum after closing the regular season with a 70-35 win at Judson Saturday afternoon.
The Bees' defense was the story of the game as the team limited the Eagles to 20-percent shooting from the floor. Judson (9-17, 6-14 CCAC) was just 10-of-50 from the field. That included a 2-of-16 mark from beyond the arc.
And after Jayla Stirgus scored on the game's opening possession, the Bees never looked back.
A 10-0 run capped by an Olivia Harter 3-pointer gave SAU a 12-2 lead seven minutes in, and the lead was 16-6 after one quarter as Judson was just 2-of-12 from the field in the frame.
The St. Ambrose defense was even better in the second, harassing Judson into a 2-of-15 mark. That led to another six-point Eagle period as the lead ballooned to 30-12 at the half.
With Abby Wolter scoring 11 points and Caitlyn Thole adding eight, SAU put up its best offensive quarter in the third, totaling 26 points. That pushed the advantage to 56-22.
Wolter led three Bees in double figures with 19 points. Thole scored 16 and Payton Calouette added 11. Thole added seven rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots while Calouette had six boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Stirgus, Harter and Mary Gruber each scored five points. Erin Jolin finished with four points, Elly Doe added three and Emma Rutter scored two.
St. Ambrose finished the regular season with a 14-14 record, including an 11-9 mark in conference play. The Bees will open the CCAC Tournament with a quarterfinal contest on the road Tuesday.
