Bees stunned by Jaguars in four sets
St. Ambrose fell to 3-4 in CCAC play following a 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22 loss at Governors State Thursday night.
The Bees, now 8-11 overall, hit just .084 for the match, and after knotting the match at one set apiece, hit a mere .043 over the final two sets.
SAU had its chances.
The Bees led 17-14 in the first set, following a five-point run highlighted by kills from Grace Beitzel and Ella Karmenzind. But Governors State (4-14, 3-3 CCAC) won seven of the next eight points to go in front 21-18. St. Ambrose never got closer than two points from there.
Two kills from Beitzel, one from Sofia Pabon, a block from Emily Hickerson and Marta Barriguinha, and an ace from Ines Marques helped SAU build a 10-1 lead to start the second set.
But even that almost wasn't enough.
The Jaguars rallied to grab a 19-17 lead. Alexa Orozco took over from there. She put down three kills and came up with a big solo block as part of a set-clinching 8-3 run.
The final two sets followed a similar script. GSU built leads midway through each set and late SAU rallies came up short.
Beitzel was the lone Bee to total double-digit kills. She finished with 13. Chloe Fabry recorded nine, Orozco finished with eight and Pabon added six. Karmenzind and Marques were each credited with three kills and Barriguinha had two.
Marques registered 25 assists to go along with five aces and 12 digs. Adriana Diaz had a team-best 17 digs and Kennedy DeBaillie picked up 15. Larkin Calay came up with six digs.
St. Ambrose will return home to host St. Francis Tuesday.
