Bees snap skid with win over RedHawks
St. Ambrose snapped a modest three-match losing streak with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-14 win at Indiana Northwest Thursday night.
The Bees came up big late in both the first and second sets before a convincing win in the third set moved the team to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
In a back-and-forth opening set, the two teams were tied as late as 22-22. A pair of errors - one serving and one attacking - gave SAU a 24-22 lead, and two points later, a Chloe Fabry kill put the Bees on the board.
Three Fabry kills over a four-point run gave St. Ambrose a 21-17 lead late in the second. But Indiana Northwest (9-16, 5-5 CCAC) came back with four straight points of their own to pull even at 21-21. SAU earned a pair of set points at 24-22 but the RedHawks erased both of them. Finally, Grace Beitzel came through with consecutive kills to win the set 26-24.
The Bees controlled the final set. SAU won the first nine points behind the serving of Ines Marques. Sofia Pabon put down three kills, Beitzel had two and Emily Hickerson added one during the spurt that was capped by an ace from Marques.
IU Northwest got back to within four points at 15-11 before SAU went on another run. Hannah Krouse and Beitzel had kills sandwiched around a RedHawk hitting error. Fabry followed with an ace before another Beitzel kill extended the lead to 20-11. Beitzel, Hickerson and Olivia Johnson combined for five kills from there to wrap up the win.
Six different Bees had multiple kills. Beitzel led the way with 17 and Fabry finished with 11. Krouse and Marta Barriguinha each put down five kills and Pabon and Hickerson ended with three apiece.
Marques led all players with 34 assists. Kennedy DeBaillie (12) and Alexa Orozco (10) both collected double-digit digs. Adriana Diaz recorded seven digs along with three of the team's nine aces. Larkin Calay posted six digs. Ella Karmenzind also picked up a pair of digs.
St. Ambrose will return home to host Indiana South Bend Saturday at 2 p.m.
