Butler walks it off for the Bees in home opener

Brenden Butler played the hero for the Fighting Bees in their home opener at Modern Woodmen Park Sunday afternoon.

In a game where the Bees were struggling at the plate, they were able to find the offense when it mattered most to get the win over the (RV) Saint Xavier Cougars (20-4, 4-1 CCAC).

St. Ambrose didn't find their first hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when Bryce Vincent smacked a double into left field to lead off the bottom of the sixth. The lack of offense was made up for in spades by Francis Quinn on the bump who went six scoreless innings on four hits and four strikeouts as the starter.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Adam Finstein was able to score the first run of the game after wheeling home on a wild pitch. The one-run lead didn't last long, however, with Saint Xavier punching across two in the following frame.

The Bees showed their resilience in the bottom of the eighth. After surrendering two quick outs, Chris McFarland and Kyel Alexander drew back-to-back walks and Mike Snow was plunked to load the bases. Max Rumpf got the job done with a pinch-hit walk to the game at two.

Relief pitcher Anthony Barrios got the job done on the mound in the top of the ninth, collecting three quick outs. Shawn Rigsby drew a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the ninth, followed up by a Bryce Vincent single up the middle to push him to third.

After intentionally walking Cooper Huckabone, the Cougars brought in an extra infielder to defend the plate. It was all for not, as Butler lifted a single to right field to walk it off for the Fighting Bees, securing the win at 3-2.

The big conference win improves the Bees to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the CCAC. The Bees will make up Saturday's rainout against Trinity Christian tomorrow at Modern Woodmen Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
