SAU wins 12-inning thriller over Judson

The St. Ambrose baseball team found a bounce-back win over the Judson Eagles (7-16, 5-4) at Modern Woodmen Park Friday afternoon.

With the game hanging in the balance in the 12th inning, Cooper Huckabone used his speed to plate the game-winning run.

Huckabone got the inning started with a lead-off walk and then worked his way around the bases thanks to a Chris McFarland single and a Ryan Kalinowski fielder's choice.

With two outs on the board, the Judson pitcher threw a wild pitch that hit the backstop. This allowed Huckabone to wheel home and win the game 4-3 for the Fighting Bees.

St. Ambrose was only able to get to this point due to a some great pitching from Nick Vollmert and James Cormier. Vollmert went eight innings as the starter, only allowing three runs and tossing six strikeouts.

Vollmert handed the ball over to Cormier in the top of the ninth, who then proceeded to shut the Eagles down. Cormier tossed four scoreless innings to go with four strikeouts en route to his second win of the season.

McFarland (4), Bryce Vincent (3), and Shawn Rigsby (2) all tallied multi-hit games. Rigsby led the Bees with two RBIs, plating the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh.

The two teams were slated for a doubleheader on Saturday, but ultimately had to postpone due to inclement weather.

With the win, St. Amrbose improved to 17-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play. The Bees will hit the road Tuesday to take on St. Xavier for a conference doubleheader.
