Bees sweep Judson; drop one to Mount Mercy

The St. Ambrose baseball team continued with their road trip Monday and Tuesday with games against the Judson Eagles and the Mount Mercy Mustangs.

The Fighting Bees were able to sweep the Eagles in the conference doubleheader, but failed to down the Mustangs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The opening game of the CCAC doubleheader went scoreless through four innings. Michael Dudek toed the slab and was able to keep the Eagles (10-21, 8-9 CCAC) at bay until the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles were could only get one run across before the Bees' bats started to wake up. Chris McFarland got SAU on the board with a sac fly that plated Bryce Vincent to the game. Two batters later, Mike Snow would break the tie with a 2-RBI single that would get Brenden Butler and Hayden Kingsbury home.

Dudek would shut down the Eagles for the final two innings to nail down the 3-1 win.

The Fighting Bees brought out the big sticks for game 2. Adrian Zietara set the tone with a leadoff home run that would catalyze a three-run first inning which saw Butler and Kyel Alexander both tally RBIs.

In the top of the third Cooper Huckabone sent a solo shot over the wall to extend the lead, followed by a pair of RBIs coming off the bats of Zietara and Nate Villagomez to push the lead to 6-1.

However, the Judson Eagles would score five unanswered to take a tie ball game into the final inning. Tyreece Morgan broke the tie using his speed to dash home on an error. Huckabone added some insurance with his second home run of the game, a three-run tank to straight away center that put the finishing touches on the contest.

After completing the sweep of their CCAC opponent, the Bees traveled up to Cedar Rapids to take on Mount Mercy (23-12) in a non-conference bout Tuesday afternoon.

Kingsbury got SAU on the board first by wheeling home on a throwing error, but the Mustangs would rattle off 10-straight runs to bury the Bees. St. Ambrose mustered up a five-spot in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late.

Vincent, Cade MeekBrock Lakin and Adam Finstein all tallied RBIs in the loss.Joey Turek went three innins as the starter, striking out three.

The Bees move to 23-7 and 14-3 in the CCAC after all is said and done. They will return to CCAC play with a game against Roosevelt on Friday.
