Bees defeat Crimson Wave 25-15, 25-21, 25-20

Other than a late second-set rally, St. Ambrose had little problem defeating Calumet 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

After cruising through the opening set, the Bees ran into problems in the second.

Calumet (2-23, 1-16 CCAC) appeared to be ready to even the match after the Crimson Wave grabbed a 20-18 lead. But SAU immediately stole momentum back.

Behind kills from Emily Hickerson, Grace Beitzel and Larkin Calay, St. Ambrose (13-17, 7-10 CCAC) ripped off four straight points to go in front 22-20. After a Wave point, back-to-back kills from Beitzel and Calay earned the Bees three set points. It took just one as Kennedy DeBaillie's ace wrapped up the set.

Calumet built an early 9-5 lead in the third, but kills from Ines Marques, Hickerson and Calay and an ace from Rilee Talty came as part of a 7-1 run that gave St. Ambrose a 12-10 advantage.

That was followed by a seven-point run, featuring kills from Beitzel, Calay and Ella Karmenzind, that established a 19-11 lead. The lead was no smaller than three points the rest of the way.

Beitzel finished with a match-best 13 kills. Hickerson and Calay each put down six kills and Karmenzind and Sofia Pabon had four apiece. Marta Barriguinha and Chloe Fabry each finished with two kills, while Marques, Talty and Olivia Johnson had one each.

While the Bees collected 40 total kills, the Wave totaled just 21. Calumet also had 20 hitting errors.

Marques led all players with 33 assists. DeBaillie picked up 14 digs while Marques had nine. Talty and Jamie Neumiller each came up with eight digs, Alexa Orozco had seven and Barriguinha added six.

The Bees will close the regular season at home Thursday against Governors State.
