Theis takes fourth to help SAU to runner-up finish
Carsen Theis fired a 6-under 138 to finish fourth individually and to help St. Ambrose to a runner-up effort at the season-opening Highland Championship played Sunday and Monday at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill.
Theis got off to a great start, shooting a 5-under 67 Sunday behind seven birdies before following that up with a 1-under 71 Monday. He was one of two Bees, and one of just 12 total players in the 21-team event, to finish under par. Teammate Luke Frazier, leading a second SAU team, closed with a 2-under 70 after starting with a 73 to finish with a 1-under 143 to tie for 11th place.
No one on the top Bee team shot worse than a 76. Jacob Stoetzel backed Theis with an even-par 144. He opened with a 2-under 70 before wrapping up the tournament with a 74 to finish 14th. Griffin Smits had rounds of 72 and 73 for a 1-over 145. Vinny Messana had back-to-back 75s for a 150 and Hayden Lee shot consecutive 76s for his 152.
St. Ambrose finished with rounds of 284 and 293 for a 577, good enough to hold off Augustana (287-291=578) for second place. Millikin took the team title with a 546 (269-277).
With Frazier leading the way, a second SAU team finished ninth with a 597 (300-297).
Brody Miguel carded a 1-over 145 (73-72), Keegan Renz fired a 152 (76-76) and Nathan Newman added a 157 (78-79). Grant Plym shot a first-day 91.
Ben King also finished with a 1-over 145 (72-73) to help a third Bee team to 13th place with a 601 (306-295). Zach Priami shot a 151 (78-73), Jacob Lange had a 153 (77-76), Mason Steinert finished with a 154 (79-75) and Luke Purcell ended with a 155 (81-74).
Evan White (77-77=154), Carson Horner (77-84=161), Quinn Ossowski (86-79=165) and Major Chisholm (final-round 89) made up a fourth SAU squad.
The Bees will next compete in the Duhawk Fall Invitational at The Meadows in Asbury, Iowa, Sept. 14-15.
